Today most religions allow cremation except for Orthodox Jewish, Islamic, Eastern Orthodox, Greek Orthodox and a few Fundamentalist Christian faiths.

Prohibited prior to the Second Vatican Council, the Catholic Church has permitted cremation as a means of disposition since the mid-1960's, though not the preferred method. Our Des Moines Diocese now permits the cremated remains to be taken to the church for the memorial mass.

Though many religions allow for the urn to be present during the service, it is advised that you consult with your individual church.
